Why we're consulting
Earlier this year, we heard from the community about what they would like to see in the new playground at Avalon Park Estate Reserve. We've taken this feedback and incorporated the preferences into the process of selecting a specialist playground supplier to design, supply and install the play equipment.
We are now at the exciting stage of being able to present two design options for the community to choose from - the power is all yours!
Previous consultation
What did we hear in the first stage of consultation which was in June/July this year.
We held a pop-up session at the park on July 7, 2025.
We utilised a budget tool which let you decide how you allocate funds towards different elements of a playground.
Background
Wodonga Council is seeking community feedback to help guide the design of an exciting, engaging and sustainable play space within the Avalon Park Estate Reserve, which the council will be upgrading in 2026.
The allocated location is approximately 7,000m2 and is located at the corner of Winter Drive and Glenwood Boulevard.
The new play space will be developed to a neighbourhood level, catering to a wide range of age groups, from pre-schoolers through to secondary school students. It will be medium to large in size, with between five and ten play features. The design will also include a shade structure or shelter, at least two to three picnic tables with bench seating, low-maintenance mulched garden beds and a water bubbler.
Wodonga Council is committed to the provision of high-quality play environments across the municipality. These should be equitable and diverse; accessible, inclusive, stimulating and challenging for a variety of age ranges. Play spaces should account for children’s physical, social, cognitive, emotional and creative skills offering variety.
The Wodonga Playspace Strategy 2024-2029 guides the development of our play space network, site assessments and independent and safety audits determine renewal recommendations and prioritisation.
Ground leveling and connection to services are being completed within the reserve prior to development.
The site is located within the B2 Precinct and sits between a WREN reserve, segregated by farm fencing, and a retention basin. Landscaping and plantings will separate the water resources from the reserve and play elements will be placed physically distanced from that part of the space.
The nearest alternate playgrounds are Ponting Way and Mel Read.
Toilets and car parking are outside the scope of the project and may be considered for future improvements subject to further development within the reserve.
What did we hear during the first stage of consultation for this playground?
In July, the community voted for what equipment, features and amenities would be included in their ideal playground at Avalon Park Estate. With a set budget and costs allocated to each possible inclusion we had a variety of responses.
There was strong support for a traditional playground design with a foundation of a medium combination unit (44 votes), swing set (51 votes - split between two styles) and flying fox (40 votes). Seating was a valued amenity (23 votes) and is essential for carers. This combination will utilise the majority of the budget and will be added to with other high priority items such as nature play (30 votes) and rope climbing (23 votes).
We also recognise the community valued other items which can't be accommodated within the budget for this project. This also provides valuable information for planning for play across Wodonga. These items included: ninja warrior course (37 votes), half-court basketball (27 votes), small pump track (23 votes) and shade (31 votes).
