Why we're consulting

Willow Park is a large recreation reserve near central Wodonga that provides attractive wide-open spaces for passive recreation, sporting fields, active recreation opportunities, and play.

Willow Park play space was identified as a high priority for upgrade in the 2024 Wodonga Play Space Strategy.

The council is developing concept plans for the purpose of seeking funding to improve the playground and increase active recreational amenities to provide a multi-age environment that will allow children to engage in activities throughout all stages of their development.

As part of the Willow Park Master Plan, developed in 2022, the eastern area of the site was identified for redevelopment for play and recreation activities to enhance the opportunities for the community within the precinct and ensure the availability of activity spaces.

  1. A new playground featuring a larger, more engaging multi-play unit, with inclusive and sensory play elements.
  2. A mix of rubber and mulch surfacing to improve accessibility.
  3. Swinging Play
  4. A learn-to-ride facility suitable for young children, incorporating road markings and safe pathways.
  5. A new hard surface multisport court

The area is to be a neighbourhood level place space that services a whole residential precinct. They are typically larger, and more prominent that the local play space with distributions similar to local primary schools.

The role and function of a neighbourhood level park is a community meeting place for play and social or family recreation. Visits are often connected to other attractions and are of a longer duration (one to two hours)

The scope of works listed is based on concept design from the Willow Park Master Plan and recent community contributions around play. Let us know your thoughts and what items you would most like to see within the space

Water play and /or splash park is outside of scope for this project as the Wodonga Creek development looks to address this gap in amenity.

Background information

Wodonga Council is committed to the provision of high-quality play environments across the municipality. These should be equitable and diverse; accessible, inclusive, stimulating and challenging for a variety of age ranges. Play spaces should account for children’s physical, social, cognitive, emotional and creative skills offering variety.

The renewal should be designed to meet the objectives and vision of the Play Space Strategy 2024-2029.

The Play Space Strategy 2024-2029 guides the development of our play space network and independent site assessments and safety audits determine renewal recommendations and prioritisation.

To assist with analysis and identifying priorities, Wodonga has been divided into play space precincts. These precincts are designed between major roads and waterway barriers to ensure that play space provision is accessible and does not require residents to traverse major roads or rivers. Willow Park is located within playground precinct Wodonga 8 (W8), along Pearce Street and accessed via Nordsvan Drive.
