Why we're consulting
Earlier this year, we heard from the community about what they would like to see in the new playground at Avalon Park Estate Reserve. We've taken this feedback and incorporated the preferences into the process of selecting a specialist playground supplier to design, supply and install the play equipment.
We are now at the exciting stage of being able to present a design to the community and want to know your thoughts!
What did we hear during the first stage of consultation for this playground?
In July, the community made 108 submissions for what equipment, features and amenities would be included in their ideal playground at Avalon Park Estate. With a set budget and costs allocated to each possible inclusion we had a variety of responses.
There was strong support for a traditional playground design with a foundation of a medium combination unit and swings. Popular features for older children included a flying fox and climbing structure which were both incorporated into the design. A basketball court was the most popular active recreation element.
Other features of the space will include path access to play via a shelter and seating to provide a space for carers. Partial shade is proposed over play and future works will include landscaping.
We also acknowledge the items community voted where were marginally less popular than the highest-ranking elements - such as a ninja warrior course, small pump track and inground trampolines. Although they could not be accommodated within the budget for this project, this feedback remains valuable for planning for play across Wodonga.

Background
The new play space is designed to a neighbourhood level, catering to a wide range of age groups, from pre-schoolers through to secondary school students. It will be medium to large in size, with between five and ten play features. The design also includes a shelter, seating, low maintenance mulched garden beds (future stage) and access path.
Wodonga Council is committed to the provision of high-quality play environments across the municipality. These should be equitable and diverse; accessible, inclusive, stimulating and challenging for a variety of age ranges. Play spaces should account for children’s physical, social, cognitive, emotional and creative skills offering variety.
The Wodonga Playspace Strategy 2024-2029 guides the development of our play space network, site assessments and independent and safety audits determine renewal recommendations and prioritisation.
Ground leveling and connection to services are being completed within the reserve prior to development.
The site is located within the B2 Precinct and sits between a WREN reserve, segregated by farm fencing, and a retention basin. Landscaping and plantings will separate the water resources from the reserve and play elements will be placed physically distanced from that part of the space.
The nearest alternate playgrounds are Ponting Way and Mel Read.
Toilets and car parking are outside the scope of the project and may be considered for future improvements subject to further development within the reserve.
