Why we're consulting

The proposed Wodonga Creek Activation Project would see development along Wodonga Creek and link the Wodonga CBA, Belvoir Park and Gateway Island through to Albury by connecting to the Wodonga pathways network to open up access to the river.

Following broad community consultation in July 2024, a draft concept design has been developed.

We are now seeking feedback on the draft concept design.

Please note:

  • Images are examples only and the final product may vary
  • Some future opportunities have been identified. These works will not be completed as part of the Wodonga Creek Activation project and will be subject to future funding
  • Construction costs may vary from what has been estimated in developing this concept plan. As budget is limited, changes may be required as we reach the tender and construction stages
  • Works are subject to formal approvals from relevant authorities once the concept design is finalised

Background information

Located in the city of Wodonga, Gateway Island sits on the northern side of Wodonga’s urban area and the Hume Freeway.

The island was formed as a result of Wodonga Creek diverging from the Murray River at the south eastern portion of the site.

Wodonga Creek forms the southern and western boundaries of the island, flowing in a northerly direction until it meets the Murray River.

The island is the low lying area south of the Murray River channel.

Wodonga Creek is an anabranch of the Murray River and carries a proportion of the total flow in the Murray River system under regulated flow and flood conditions.

The vision for Gateway Island is that it is the heart of one community, respecting and valuing Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultures, showcasing a native Australian environment, and providing a sustainable and vibrant community and economic activity space.

In addition, Gateway Island will develop into a major drawcard, attracting travellers off the Hume Freeway to enjoy a recreational and cultural revival during long journeys.

The aim of the Wodonga Creek Project is to complete development along the creek and link the Wodonga CBA, Belvoir Park and Gateway Island through to Albury by connecting to the Wodonga pathways network to open up access to the river and grow the tourism market.

It will link the Wodonga CBA, Belvoir Park, Gateway Island through to Albury’s Murray River Experience and CBA by connecting to the Wodonga pathways network.

Infrastructure to be investigated include water access, paddling and swimming areas, seating and viewing locations, fishing platforms, picnic tables, toilets and barbecue areas. Play areas provide recreational opportunities for families and act as an attractor for the region’s strong visiting family and friends market.

To support the usage of activity nodes by the creek, identified in the Gateway Island master plan, the project will include formalising access and parking and provide improved lighting. The project includes access and path linkages, wayfinding and interpretative signage and public art installation.

Please note: While we would love to include absolutely everything in the concept design, there are constraints and limitations. The project has a limited budget (council contribution and Albury Wodonga Regional Partnership Projects funding) and construction costs must be taken into consideration. In addition, the final design will require external approval from a number of organisations and this may impact what is included.
