Where is 'Ross Close'?

'Ross Close' is the proposed name for the single road created within the subdivision at 24-30 Jarrah St, Wodonga.

Background information

The developer of this residential subdivision has provided the following in support of their road naming proposal:

“We looked at the early explorers for inspiration, Hamilton Hume and William Hovell as an example and those such as Henri McIllree and others who gave much to Wodonga during their lives. Inextricably linked was their heritage, English, Irish and Scottish and to this day those three heritage groups combined are still the largest ancestral groups within the Albury-Wodonga region.

But Heritage is nothing without a connection to land. And what really sticks out in that area is what is referred to as the Red Clay Bush. With the Great Dividing Range acting as a natural barrier, inland winds come up against a formidable barrier carrying their red sands from central Australia. They are unable to lift them up and over the range resulting in a deposit at the base. Over millions of years, these sands build up and the soil structure around the outskirts of Wodonga are evidence of time. Bush grows where it can and dependent on water sources. The Murray combined with these slowly shifting sands have provided a unique growing environment, one which has been well acknowledged over many years.

Linking the Red Clay Bush to the early European explorers and settlers was the ultimate objective and through Gaelic language we were able to come up with the word RauÖr or Red. Then utilising Gaelic origins, the word Ros (which also means Red) seemed a natural fit.

To our first point – we wanted to acknowledge a name and whilst “Ros” on its own could have been the name, we felt that an extra S, making it Ross seemed easier to pronounce for emergency services. It acknowledges through ancestry the initial heritage of the early explorers and through language origin, the colour red which we think nicely nods to a soil characteristic in the area.”

Based on the Naming Rules for Places in Victoria – Statutory Requirements for Naming Roads, Features and Locations (2022), a road name duplication check was performed. There are no similar sounding or spelling road names within 5 kilometre radius.

The concept of this name has also been cross-checked by Geographic Names Victoria and was supported.
