Why we're consulting
Wodonga Council is embarking on an important initiative to develop a policy and subsequent action plans that will shape our approach to electronic gaming machines and alcohol.
Council acknowledges the potential harms associated with electronic gaming and alcohol misuse and the importance of minimising them. Simultaneously, we are committed to supporting a vibrant, prosperous, and safe night-time economy in Wodonga.
Your feedback is incredibly valuable in shaping the future strategic activities of council and will contribute to a well-rounded and thoughtful approach that prioritises the overall well-being of our community.
Together, we can explore innovative solutions, establish effective interventions, and foster a balanced and responsible environment for electronic gaming and alcohol consumption.
Background information
Currently, Wodonga has three venues licenced to operate electronic gaming machines and a total of 143 electronic gaming machines. Wodonga also has 95 licenced liquor venues, including hotels, pubs, bottle shops, clubs and restaurants.
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Wodonga has experienced a substantial surge in gaming expenditure since the re-opening of venues. This increase has been accompanied by a concerning rise in incidents of family violence and a higher number of ambulance call-outs related to alcohol consumption. Alcohol misuse contributes significantly to higher rates of family violence, physical assaults, and emergency department presentations.
Looking ahead, the City of Wodonga anticipates significant population growth over the next 15 to 20 years. This presents a valuable opportunity to promote a wider range of well-designed and strategically located entertainment activities and facilities throughout the community. This includes the revitalisation of the central business area and the urban renewal area known as Junction Place.
Currently, the municipality lacks a comprehensive council-wide strategy to prevent and reduce the harms associated with alcohol abuse and gambling. The forthcoming alcohol and gambling policies and strategies will serve as a roadmap for the Council to fulfil its obligations in fostering healthy and secure venues and spaces where alcohol is consumed and legal gambling activities occur. Moreover, these initiatives aim to support the development of a thriving, prosperous business community in Wodonga.
The proposed policies and strategies will not only provide guidance for the Council's collaboration with the community, alcohol and gambling industries, and service providers but also facilitate improved access to healthcare services. Furthermore, they will involve advocating for legislative changes and ensuring that licensed establishments and gambling venues are appropriately located, designed, and managed to mitigate potential risks.
