A Community Vision is a community-led and informed document that outlines our aspirations for the future of the city.
To complete this project, the council committed to collaborating with the community while also ensuring the panel and process was independent, which meant that the resulting Vision document was reflective of the aspirations of the people of Wodonga.
The draft Wodonga 2050 Community Vision was developed by the Wodonga 2050 Deliberative Panel in September 2024.
Following a campaign seeking expressions of interest from the community, members of the Deliberative Panel were selected by an independent consultant using a stratified random selection process. These panel members participated in robust discussions over four days to develop the Wodonga 2050 Community Vision.
The document was presented to the council at the ordinary meeting on Monday, November 25, 2024 and the council resolved to seek further community feedback before considering the document for adoption.
We invite all community members to review the draft Wodonga 2050 Community Vision and provide your feedback using the online form under the "Have Your Say" tab.
Background information
It is an important part of the Local Government Act 2020 (the Act) that each local government area develops a Community Vision (the Vision) and long-term planning documents to support the Vision.
Under the Act, the Vision must have scope for at least the next 10 financial years.
The council has worked collaboratively with the community, in line with the council’s Community Engagement Policy, to develop the Wodonga 2050 Community Vision, which will replace the present Wodonga 2033 Vision.
The 2050 timeframe aligns with AlburyCity’s Towards 2050 document.
Since September 2023, five project phases have been implemented, providing multiple opportunities for community members to contribute to shaping the future vision, by means of community forums, neighbourhood pop-ups, community conversations, online engagement and community-facilitated group conversations using the community engagement toolkit.
A Strategic Engagement Plan was developed by the council during the Engagement Design phase, with a range of community contributors who represented different voices from the community included. The Strategic Engagement Plan was adopted by the council on Monday, September 18, 2023 and identified the five project phases.
- Engagement Design - September 2023
- Launch and activation - November 2023
- Community Conversations - April 2024
- Development - August 2024
- Adoption - November 2024
The Strategic Engagement Plan provided a roadmap that included a community deliberative panel to undertake deeper engagement for the development of the final vision during the development phase. This deliberative engagement process put the community at the centre of this important stage.
The Wodonga 2050 Vision Community Deliberative Panel consisted of 35 Wodonga residents, selected independently through a random process to ensure a diverse representation. This approach brought together a broad cross-section of the community to collaborate on shaping the Vision.
During September 2024, four sessions with the Deliberative Panel were facilitated by an external consultant, and the panel heard from subject matter experts who presented on the key themes identified from the feedback received in Stages 2 and 3.
The Community Vision addresses all levels of government, community and industry with a vision statement, key themes and priorities to reflect the community's aspirations for Wodonga's future.
The Wodonga 2050 Community Vision will inform the development of the next four year Council Plan, Financial Plan, Asset Plan and Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan, as well as other strategic council documents into the future.
